Challenge

As ten years in the fight against mosquito-borne disease approached, consumer goods giant, SC Johnson was overdue in sharing the story of its work in underserved communities. Beyond the direct impact the company was making, SC Johnson’s strategy and its partnerships with national governments and global NGOs held tremendous potential for influence. The SC Johnson team knew strong storytelling was key for demonstrating how serious the company is about its values and inspiring other companies to follow suit.

To this end, Carr and Company collaborated with design firm, Ghostlab, to bring SC Johnson’s public health work to life for audiences ranging from employees in Wisconsin, to advocates on Capitol Hill, to Ministries of Health in Africa and SE Asia.

Process

To start, our team convened a cross-functional group of SC Johnson leaders – representing R&D, Corporate Communications, Regulatory Affairs, and others – for a co-design session focused on communication objectives, audiences, and stories to feature.


Then, we gathered perspectives from some of SC Johnson’s strategic partners in the US, the UK, Tanzania, and Rwanda to add dimension and detail to the narrative. The anecdotes we collected at this stage helped us convey both the systemic and the personal impact of SC Johnson’s response to complex issues.

Ultimately, we weaved together data, stories, photography, and quotes to capture an up-to-date picture of the company’s efforts to ensure that its presence around the world is an additive one.

Outputs and Outcomes

The Impact Report we produced, in print and digital form, was distributed first to a small group of the company’s private shareholders, then more broadly to SC Johnson employees and partners around the world. And, as in previous years, the Report was shared hand-to-hand from SC Johnson’s Chairman to global heads of state and public health leaders.

We’re proud that this work has made SC Johnson’s efforts more broadly known throughout the company and helped set the stage for even greater impact in the global public health space.
